Summer Isn't Relaxing for Everyone
Somewhere along the way, summer got a really good publicist.
We're told it's the season to relax. Take vacations. Spend time outside. Make memories. Recharge.
It sounds wonderful.
But if we're being honest, summer doesn't feel relaxing for everyone.
Sometimes planning a vacation feels like you need a vacation afterward.
Maybe you're coordinating flights, figuring out who's watching the dog, remembering everyone's medications, and wondering how something that's supposed to be relaxing somehow became another project to manage.
Maybe everyone on social media seems to be living their best summer while you're just trying to make it through another workweek.
Maybe you're working extra hours because everyone else is taking vacation.
Maybe your kids are home for the summer.
Maybe you're spending this season grieving someone you wish was here.
Or maybe your anxiety simply didn't get the memo that it's summertime.
Life doesn't magically become easier because the weather is nicer.
And neither should your compassion for yourself disappear just because everyone else seems to be having the "perfect summer."
Summer Can Disrupt More Than Your Schedule
Summer has a funny way of disrupting the things that usually keep us grounded.
For some people, that's changing work schedules.
For others, it's kids being out of school.
Maybe it's traveling more than usual.
Maybe it's hosting family.
Maybe it's trying to keep a routine while everyone around you seems to be throwing theirs out the window.
Even good changes can be stressful.
When our routines change, it's not unusual to notice we're feeling more irritable, overwhelmed, distracted, or emotionally drained.
That doesn't mean you're doing something wrong.
It might simply mean your mind and body are working harder to adjust than you realize.
You Don't Have to Have the "Perfect" Summer
Summer can come with a lot of expectations.
The perfect vacation.
The perfect family photos.
The perfectly planned weekends.
The feeling that you should be making every sunny day count.
Listen... some of the best moments aren't the ones we spend weeks planning.
They're eating ice cream after dinner because why not.
They're laughing with a friend until your stomach hurts.
They're sitting on the porch after a long day and finally taking a deep breath.
They're choosing to stay home because that's what your mind and body needed.
Not every meaningful memory has to be Instagram-worthy.
Sometimes You're Carrying More Than Anyone Can See
We all carry different things.
Maybe you're the planner in your family.
Maybe you're the friend everyone calls when they're struggling.
Maybe you're caring for aging parents.
Maybe you're navigating a new job or a major life change.
Maybe you're simply trying to keep your own head above water while making it look easy.
Whatever you're carrying, it deserves your attention too.
You don't have to wait until you're completely burned out to slow down.
You don't have to earn rest.
And you don't have to carry everything by yourself.
A Gentle Reminder
If this season hasn't felt as carefree as everyone promised it would, you're not doing summer wrong.
You're just living a real life.
Give yourself permission to enjoy what you can, let go of what you can't, and remember that taking care of your mental health is just as important in July as it is any other time of year.
And if the weight you're carrying feels like more than you can manage on your own, support is available.
